Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil denies causing fire at his flat and says ‘I’m the victim’
AMY Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil has denied causing a fire at his flat.
Neighbours called 999 as it tore through his seventh-floor home.
As they banged on doors to alert others, they said the junkie, 37, walked out and laughed “I’ve set fire to my curtains” before wandering off to take more drugs.
He was arrested on suspicion of arson and released under investigation. He told The Sun: “I didn’t start the fire. I’m the victim.”
Five fire engines raced to the scene and crews were at the block in Leeds for five hours on Tuesday. No one was injured but he had a hospital check-up for smoke-inhalation.
Krystal Howard, 33, and her husband John, 52, live next door to him at the 16-storey Gamble Hill Croft flats.
She said: “We could feel the heat through our bedroom wall, it was red hot.
“And then another neighbour came braying on our door shouting that there was a fire.
“We have come out and seen and smelt the smoke and seen Blake just standing outside on the landing.
“Blake said ‘it’s only a bit of smoke. I have set my curtains on fire’ and then he just laughed.”
John added: “He was not at all sorry for what he’d done and did nothing to try and help people escape.
“It was the fire brigade who actually located Blake before the police arrived and arrested him.”
Fielder-Civil, who has admitted introducing singer Amy to heroin, is claiming £1million from her estate eight years after her death, saying he wrote some of her hits.
But her furious parents blasted his shameless money-making scheme saying: “He deserves nothing.”
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: ”The man arrested on suspicion of arson has been released under investigation.”
